Review

Ted Harrison’s stunning full-page illustrations capture the essence of
each province as he depicts Prince Edward Island’s red soil, beaches,
and herons; Quebec’s mountains, distinctive houses, and churches; and
Ontario’s Blue Jays and city towers. Harrison’s love for his adopted
country shines forth in paintings that show the unparalleled beauty and
unique qualities of this land.

Facing each painting are two lines of “O Canada” and brief personal
commentary by Harrison, both in French and English. The foreword tells
how he came to settle in the Yukon, and expresses the hope that
Canadians will remain united within their diverse cultures. A copy of
the song in French and in English is included as well as information on
the history of its composer, R. Stanley Weir.

Harrison’s joyous paintings help us look at our country with new
eyes. O Canada is first choice for school and public libraries to use as
curriculum-support material in Canada, for stimulating art ideas, or for
simply learning the correct words of our national anthem. Although
useful at the Grade 3 level, this book is sophisticated enough for
adults. Everyone will enjoy Harrison’s strikingly graceful tribute to
our northern home. Highly recommended.
