Ethel King-Shaw is a professor emeritus of curriculum and instruction at
the University of Calgary.

Review

These two books are part of the series of eight Talk-About-Books, which
are intended to be among the first books a young child encounters. The
size, format, and durability of the books are appropriate for infants.
Each one contains 15 colorful photographs (one on each page) of children
participating in everyday experiences. The children portrayed vary in
age, gender, and race.

As the series title suggests, the books should provide opportunities
for discussion relating to the child’s own experiences. In addition,
vocabulary development may be encouraged, particularly around terms such
as families, sisters, brothers, older, younger, twins, play, party,
pretend, noisy, quiet, friend, laugh, share, and together. Under the
guidance of an adult who can provide the right kind of stimulation, the
books will be useful and the sharing enjoyable. Without this direction,
there is the possibility of misinterpretation or the formation of
inaccurate concepts. Recommended.
