Review

As Ma MacDonald goes about her daily farm chores, she realizes that it
is time for her baby to be born. She reclines in the grass by the barn
and sends her older daughter, Mary, for a thermos of hot water. Ma then
proceeds to have her baby, and by the time Mary returns the new baby has
arrived, still attached to its umbilical cord.

After washing the child and resting for a while, Ma nurses the boy,
whom she decides to call Davy. She and Mary walk through the fields to
their home, where Mary brings her mother food. Then the girl telephones
the good news to the rest of the family.

The story is told in very few words, which can be sung to the familiar
tune of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” It should intrigue a small
child, especially if a new baby is expected in the family.

The attractive illustrations are a mix of black-and-white sketches and
full-color pictures. The cover is well designed and especially
eye-catching.

This insightful introduction to natural childbirth will lead to easy
talks with young children about how babies are born. Recommended.
