Review

Investment guru Gordon Pape’s foray into the complex world of Canadian
customs, tariffs, and border crossings is a must-read for Canadian
travelers. The focus is on the rules for bringing home antiques,
jewelry, alcohol, groceries, and cars from Mexico and the United States.
One chapter is devoted to the perils of smuggling and another to the
avoidance of customs hassles. The coverage is uneven (the chapters on
worst buys and best buys are particularly sketchy), but this is the
first edition of an annual publication, and readers are invited to
submit information for inclusion in later editions. In addition to
money-saving tips (e.g., a $10 bottle of California wine will end up
costing $15.46 if you enter Canada through Saskatchewan and $29.07 if
you enter through Quebec because of the different provincial taxes on
imported alcohol), Pape gives us a bird’s-eye view of the absurdities
of Canada’s customs and tariff regulations. Highly recommended to
public libraries and to international travelers.
