In this latest adventure in the Liz Austen Mystery series, 16-year-old
Liz has secured an acting role in a play to be performed in a New
Brunswick town. She becomes embroiled in the local controversy over the
merits of establishing a huge tourist mall in the town. Several
incidents of arson, harassing phone calls to council members, and other
forms of intimidation are linked to the vote. Various prominent
townspeople are acting suspiciously. A werewolf is sighted by a number
of people, including Liz. In the process of investigating the mysterious
werewolf and discovering the identity of the arsonist, Liz and her
friend, Makiko (a recurring character in the series), are able to help
the townspeople in a variety of ways.
This detective story for adolescents is in the Nancy Drew tradition.
Several mysteries revolve around the central issue of the werewolf, and,
although none is particularly difficult to penetrate, the skill with
which they are integrated to create a whole will engage the interest of
readers. Parents and teachers should be aware that one subplot involves
a case of sexual child abuse, with the emphasis on stopping it, rather
than on the details of the abuse itself. Recommended.
