Review
Another craft book. Is this a necessary purchase and why? The answer is
yes if you need the following: a book of easy crafts for young children
aged 5 and up; a book with easy-to-follow instructions and clearly
labeled diagrams; a book promoting the use of found and recyclable
items; a book requiring minimum adult supervision, but one that children
and adults will enjoy using together; and a book that leads to
attractive creations.
Materials for the projects are listed under “household items”
(e.g., rice, yarn, dental floss, markers, cotton balls, photos, ribbon,
and used pantyhose), “nature treasures” (e.g., flowers, pebbles,
sand, pine cones), and “trash” (e.g., cans, used stamps, glass jars,
and used wrapping paper)—all easy to find or inexpensive to buy.
Following the numbered instructions, which are clearly illustrated in
black and white on well-organized pages, will lead to enjoyable
results—a framed magnet, a pine cone wreath, and a glittering angel,
to name a few.
Most of the “gifts” are for all occasions, including Easter and
Christmas. Unfortunately, using this organizational approach to
presenting the gifts overlooks the current demand for more multicultural
crafts. Nonetheless, this book successfully presents material that many
will enjoy. Highly recommended.
