Sketches can be as evocative as paintings without the embellishment of
color. Narale has always been intrigued with the effect that a few
simple, well-executed lines can have on an observer. Over the years he
has mastered the technique of sketching; in Simple Linework he passes
this learning on to others.
The manual is divided into two parts: instructions for improved
sketching and a folio of drawings illustrating the artist’s mature
technique. In the first section, Narale outlines the key requirements
for effective linework: thickness of line in proportion to size of
sketch, balancing line masses against blank areas, appropriate use of
shading, and how and when to emphasize detail. The directions are
accompanied by sketches depicting proper and improper techniques for
comparison. In the second section, he presents the kind of simple,
well-balanced, consistent, and visually compelling linework that can be
achieved by following his technique.
This book would be a useful instructional tool for teachers of classes
where students are already familiar with figure and object drawing, and
understand the principles of composition and perspective. Recommended.
