Review

1987—the Year I Was Born is an arrangement of trivia tidbits designed
to paint a portrait of 1987 for those who were born in that year and
older children. This eclectic (and seemingly arbitrary) collection of
facts provides (in a whimsical way) a glimpse into the social life of
the late 1980s. Although it is colorful, humorously illustrated, and
well laid out, the text may be difficult for some readers to follow;
young readers, especially, will require parental involvement to make
sense of such trivia as the retirement of Northern Dancer from stud or
the introduction of halogen light bulbs. And though trivia selected
includes birthdates of children’s authors, sports figures, and other
recognizable people, facts about important political or scientific
events are mostly missing.

This book functions best as a keepsake or a trivia reference. The
contents will bring a smile to adult faces, but any parent acquiring
this book for his or her 7-year-old will literally have a lot of
explaining to do. Recommended with reservations.
