Some 40 Canadians, young and old, share their experiences and
impressions of emigrating to Canada from places as diverse as Bolivia,
New Zealand, Iraq, Barbados, and Singapore. Many describe fleeing
war-torn countries to escape terrorism and persecution. Uniting these
wide-ranging accounts are the high hopes of their authors for a more
secure and bountiful life in Canada, “the land of opportunity.” Each
profile provides unique insights into how Canadians respond to newcomers
and the difficulties experienced by the newcomers themselves. Although
some accounts are bitingly frank in their discussion of discrimination
and prejudice, the majority depict Canadians in a kinder light,
describing those who offered friendship and assistance. This book would
be a valuable teaching aid in the classroom and/or resource in the
library. Each profile includes suggested discussion topics and follow-up
activities. Highly recommended.
