Review

The Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators, and
Performers (CANSCAIP) has in this volume compiled biographical details
and information on personal-appearance availability for its more than
350 members. Each member profile also includes an address, a telephone
number, a list of published or illustrated works, and any awards,
exhibitions, or other memberships.

Although a useful reference for those interested in the literary and
performing arts in Canada for children, The CANSCAIP Companion has
certain limitations. While the majority of Canadian children’s writers
are members, there are some notable exceptions whom aficionados will not
find here—Ian Wallace, C.J. Taylor, and Bobbie Kalman, among others.
Illustrators are similarly well (but not comprehensively) represented.
Well-known performers are rather thin on the ground, so don’t look for
Fred Penner or Sharon, Lois, and Bram here.

The biographical information is generally well written and interesting,
but the black-and-white photos of the artists are frequently of dubious
quality. Nevertheless, this book is an invaluable source for those who
appreciate the work of Canadian children’s artists. Recommended.
