Review

This large book, with its easy-to-read print and beautiful
illustrations, is indeed a treasury of intriguing stories and verse
written by well-known Canadian authors.

The contents are divided into five sections: “The First People,”
“Other Worlds,” “Other Times,” “Animal Lives,” and “Here
and Now.” Many of the stories are excerpts from books and are sure to
pique the interest and curiosity of the young reader. It is hoped he or
she will either buy, or get from the library, the books that tell the
entire stories.

In her foreword, Janet Lunn notes how different the styles of the
writers are, yet each story and verse presents subject matter that is
uniquely Canadian. Native legends are told in fanciful, dancing words,
while fairy tales tend to concentrate on the plot. Nonsense verses and
social commentary all add variety and richness to a child’s reading
enjoyment.

The many illustrations throughout the book are in full color. For
stories set in the future, the pictures are often rather stark. For
legends, animal stories, and historical excerpts, softer lines and tones
are used. All are appropriate and enhance the text.

This entertaining collection is a unique introduction to the many
Canadian tales available to young readers. Highly recommended.
