Review

Located in Tom Austen’s hometown, Winnipeg, this story tells of the
kidnapping of Tom’s wealthy classmate Dianne Dorchester, a scenario
familiar to those who have read Terror in Winnipeg and The Prairie Dog
Conspiracy. Wilson’s young detective, nurtured on the Hardy Boys,
overhears bits of a conspiratorial conversation in a deserted house, and
intrepidly follows his leads into serious jeopardy.

Although the story shares some characters and basic plot details with
Wilson’s later “Winnipeg novels,” it is a rougher, rawer piece of
writing—without the flesh of an environmental motive or subtle plot
twists. The author’s talent for introducing young readers to the
Canadian landscape is not to be denied, and it is hoped that his next
mystery will continue to explore new territory. Recommended.
