Review

Wonderful summer plans are spoiled for 12-year-old Nikki when her
cousin, Trevor, who is confined to a wheelchair as the result of an
accident, comes to visit. He is unhappy. His parents have decided to
separate, and he feels responsible. He also lacks confidence
scholastically: his school work has suffered, and he refuses to accept
help.

The cousins dislike each other initially, but as the fast-paced story
unfolds, they become friends. Swimming, camping, and horseback riding
all contribute to Trevor’s change of attitude. When he snatches a
toddler from the road as she is about to be struck by a car, his
expertise and speed with his wheelchair build his confidence. This leads
to his participation in a sports day for the physically challenged.
Despite an injury to his arm, he wins the gold medal and the chance to
take part in future competitions.

Other friends and subplots are included in this very enjoyable story.
Information about the physically challenged is subtly woven into the
story and presents the young reader with a thought-provoking theme.
Humor is also used skilfully, and the ending leaves the reader feeling
pleased and satisfied. Highly recommended.
