Review

Ten-year-old Ubu wants, more than anything, to be rich. By day she works
on the farm, and, by night, she studies witchcraft. Surely magic spells
can make her rich.

However, her mentor, the Witch of Nyssa, reminds her of the rules in
her contract that forbid making money for personal gain. Here the reader
is introduced to the WWA—the Wicked Witches Agency—and the
AWW—theAgency of Well-being Witches.

Ubu finds herself in the land of Terra Nova, where nothing is as she
supposes. She has many adventures with the homeless, the wicked witches
who steal children, with chemical experiments in making gold, and with
babysitting a crocodile, to name a few. She attempts to live up to her
witch’s pledge of honesty and loyalty but, despite her powers, she
finds she often fails. Using her magic headband and a multitude of
friends, she keeps trying to get rich.

This book has a light, amusing style that carries the extremely
convoluted plot. The full-color cover highlights some of the weird and
humorous adventures. An alert reader, willing to follow the many
imaginative sidelines of the plot, will find this book a delightful
challenge. Recommended.
