Review

The narrator loves to play hockey with his best friend. They play every
day after school, practising slapshots, wrist shots, and backhands.
Sometimes they pretend they’re in the big leagues and provide their
own play-by-play commentary like television announcers. Sometimes they
play on a real ice rink with “the bigger guys.”

This is a delightful tale of friendship and the pleasures of shared
activities. The competitive aspect of one-on-one hockey is downplayed in
favor of an emphasis on cooperative practice, mutual development of
skills, and taking turns. Bright crayon illustrations underscore the
book’s high-spirited message of the joys of cooperative play. Highly
recommended.
