Review

Stompin’ Tom Connors’s popular song “Bud the Spud” is presented
in an attractive, large-format children’s book. Bud the Spud is a
truck driver moving potatoes (“the best doggone potatoes that’s ever
been growed”) rapidly through New Brunswick and Quebec to Ontario. The
complete verses of the song (though not the music) are included at the
end of the book.

Preschoolers will enjoy Brenda Jones’s numerous charming, brightly
colored illustrations, many of which have humorous details, are
double-paged, and depict beautiful Prince Edward Island events in the
truck driver’s life on the road. Bud the Spud would be a useful
addition to food units in primary grades as well as an interesting
read-aloud poem or song.

Recommended for all Stompin’ Tom fans and others who enjoy a light,
affectionate look at our basic Canadian food staple.
