Review

Dr. Margaret Merrifield, the Director of Health and Wellness Services at
Washington State University, has written a sensitive story about a
mother with HIV. The book is intended for caregivers to share with young
primary-level children. In the story, the twins—Max and Maggie—learn
to deal with their mother’s illness, and are loved and supported
throughout by their mother, their aunt and uncle, and a special friend
introduced to them by a doctor. Told without didacticism, the story
informs readers about AIDS and such topics as the grieving process.
There is a resource section for adults and an excellent annotated
bibliography divided by age levels.

This unique book, realistically illustrated by Heather Collins, is an
excellent companion volume to the author’s and illustrator’s first
book, Come Sit By Me, which told the story of an HIV-positive child.
Highly recommended.
