Review

This colorful book outlines 13 simple experiments or projects that young
people can use to demonstrate basic principles of matter. They will
learn that matter comes in three forms and that it can change from one
form to another. For each activity, the reader is given an opening
statement to stimulate thinking about a concept, a series of easily
available materials, a set of easy-to-follow directions, and further
background to the principles demonstrated.

The text is organized into separate boxes that are laid over full-color
photographs of boys and girls who are obviously enjoying the activities
described in the book. Although the book has a brief index, simple
glossary, and table of contents, it would have benefited from an
introductory section to establish the context for the book, give an
overview of the format, and reinforce the responsible use of materials.

Budding scientists and inquisitive young readers will enjoy the variety
of activities and their ease of use. Classroom teachers and parents will
find activities enjoyable and easy to carry out. Recommended.
