Review

This social history of Sikhs in Canada is filled with photographs,
charts, maps, timelines, and sidebars. The book’s four main chapters
cover Sikh migrations to Canada, Sikh religion and history, Sikh culture
and traditions, and Sikhs in Canada today. Included in the book are a
glossary of Sikh terms, a listing of provincial addresses of gurdwara
temples, a Sikh calendar, and a bibliography. There is a detailed table
of contents but no index.

The author, himself a Sikh, spent several years researching the subject
with the intent of increasing young Canadians’ understanding of the
heritage, culture, and religion of their Sikh-Canadian neighbors. He has
succeeded in his intent. Unfortunately, because of its textbook format,
students will probably pick up this book only for assignment purposes.
Recommended as a classroom resource for Grades 6 to 9.
