Review

There’s a good story with a sense of time and place in this mystery
for young people. Dorothy Perkyns’s careful historical research,
detailing life in Canada and Britain during World War II, provides an
authentic background to the tale she spins about a 14-year-old girl who
has a series of linked secret adventures. They take her from an
encounter with a spy in the English countryside and the discovery of a
hidden radio transmitter to her evacuation by ship to Nova Scotia and
the exciting events that close the circle of mysteries.

Although the pace of the narrative is slowed sometimes by the use of
clichés, Perkyns writes with a clarity of language that does not
condescend to readers. The believable story, with its well-defined
atmosphere, is likely to be enjoyed by its intended audience.
Recommended.
