Review

This is the sixth in the series of pop-up books about natural and
manmade wonders. The books have a unique format: they are 14 cm x 11 cm
and can fit conveniently in a pocket.

The author has selected seven inventions that she feels best represent
the greatest strides in human knowledge, namely the wheel, the printing
press, the engine, photography, radio, flight, and the microchip. A
brief but informative description of the discovery and development of
each invention is accompanied by a pop-up illustration. Some of these
three-dimensional pop-ups can be manipulated by the reader for further
elucidation of the invention’s function. The backgrounds are richly
illustrated with diagrams and scenes relating to the invention.

This eye-catching and intriguing little book is a novel introduction to
the world of scientific invention. Recommended.
