Children never cease to enjoy the element of surprise. This fantasy
adventure about a boy who unexpectedly meets an elephant in his backyard
sandbox certainly appeals to that taste. Through simple dialogue, the
elephant and the boy begin an unusual friendship that is strengthened by
a series of rollicking adventures. The boy befriends the distraught
elephant, an escapee from the zoo, by disguising him as a butterfly, a
dog, and a moose, among other things, but the disguises only make the
elephant more conspicuous.
Pierre Pratt’s strong impasto-like artwork has an appealing childlike
quality and is well suited to the text. This funny and whimsical story
imparts its message of helping others with sensitivity and imagination.
