Review

One of the most difficult periods to re-create with fidelity is early
childhood. Charles Foran convincingly relives his childhood in The Story
of My Life (So Far). This emotionally satisfying and beautifully written
memoir captures childish fears and joys, the kind of strange logic that
makes a child’s world tolerable, the wonders of discovery of the human
body and of the world, the subtle changes taking place in the
consciousness as time slowly passes, and the easy-come, easy-go
friendships that last a lifetime. The author’s childhood is unique but
at the same time universal. As the cover blurb states, Foran’s story
“is that of any child growing up: a journey of discovery and delight,
and the slow, beautifully organic unfolding into what we call the
‘self.’”
