Review
This book tells the story of Bill Kostiuk, one of the earliest Ukrainian
settlers in Canada (he arrived in Canada in 1898 at the age of 4). His
daughter, Anne Everatt, recounts her father’s recollections of his
life in the Ukraine, the ocean journey to Canada, the hardships endured
by the family after their arrival, and their eventual adjustment to life
in this country.
The text appears in Ukrainian, English, and French. While the English
and French texts are grammatically correct, the Ukrainian text contains
some minor, easily overlooked errors. The simple illustrations, like the
text, convey the sincerity of a child’s perspective. Recommended.
