Review

Super Skaters is an in-depth account of figure skating and the stars who
have made it one of today’s more popular spectator sports. The book
traces the history of skating, from its origins thousands of years ago,
to the proliferation of skating clubs in Europe and North America in the
18th and 19th centuries, to the emergence of national and international
competitions. As figure skating has become more technically demanding
and its choreography more creative, its athletes have evolved into
superstars. The author does a good job of chronicling the growing
popularity of the sport, and the reasons behind it. Diagrams illustrate
the complex jumps that have transformed figure skating in recent years.
Full-page color photographs of the athletes are accompanied by
biographical and statistical material. Highly recommended.
