Review

This attractive addition to the Kids Can Crafts series introduces
various lettering techniques. Step-by-step instructions are given for
both traditional and original letter forms. Projects include
invitations, signs, banners, place cards, a calendar, book plates, and
three-dimensional cardboard letters. Directions are clear and easy to
follow, although overly sketchy in the chapter on computer activities.

Soft, colorful illustrations add to the overall appeal of the book,
which includes tips on creating effective borders and headlines, as well
as design principles. Although most of the tools are readily accessible
(pencils, elastic bands, tape, paper, etc.), at least one calligraphy
pen or marker is needed for the majority of projects. All in all, a
useful addition to home or school libraries. Recommended.
