Review

This modeling set comes with two packages of Model Magic clay—enough
for several small projects—and a bright, visually appealing book. From
simple beads and flowers to birds, frames, and movable cars, the 17
projects included range from easy to challenging and introduce children
to different modeling techniques. Each spread is dominated by a
background photograph of finished projects, with inset illustrations for
the directions.

Model Magic is unusual for its lightness and slightly pliable texture
when dry. It is easy to use but must be worked to the right level of
tackiness to model well. The projects presented make the most of the
distinct nature of this clay. To achieve results as pictured, using
different colors of clay, children would need more than the two packages
of clay provided. Directions are not given for all the pieces shown.
Also, directions throughout are a bit sketchy; children with no previous
modeling experience may need help.

This book is suitable for capable crafters 8 and up, or for kids of any
age with adult guidance. For those willing to purchase more supplies
(e.g., other colors of clay and glaze), this kit has some great project
ideas for this versatile modeling material. Recommended with
reservations.
