Review

The purpose of this book is to teach children how language works. It
includes sections on the parts of speech; sentences, phrases, and
clauses; punctuation; usage; and functional grammar. While the book
claims to be designed for 8- to 12-year-olds, some of the vocabulary it
uses (e.g., “metalanguage”) is clearly too sophisticated for this
age group.

Almost one-quarter of the book is devoted to the study of
“traditional grammar.” Students who are just beginning to express
themselves in writing will find this part of the book heavy going.
Parsing sentences is not a necessary skill in beginning writing.

More useful are the sections on punctuation, homonyms, and usage.
Recommended with reservations.
