Review

Canada is home to more than 200 known fort sites, many established by
various governments, others by Native peoples. Forts were constructed
both for military purposes and to protect commercial enterprises. The
authors of this book live in Kingston, Ontario, the site of Canada’s
largest and most expensive British fort.

As teachers and writers, Owens and Yealland have acquired an extensive
knowledge of Canadian fort history. Together with illustrator Don Kilby,
they have produced an amazingly informative book that traces Canadian
fort history from the early pre-European Iroquois palisades through to
World War II coastal batteries. Also included are maps, a glossary of
military terms, and an index of forts that are still open to the public.
Readers are even shown how to build models of several types of forts.
Highly recommended.
