Review

Every morning, the king’s daughters are tired and their dancing shoes
are worn to shreds. The king offers the hand of a princess in marriage
to the man who can solve the mystery in three days. The princesses
outwit suitor after suitor, until one day a poor soldier comes to try
his luck. That night he follows the princesses to a magical place where
they dance so much that they wear their shoes out. When the king learns
the truth, the soldier is able to choose the eldest daughter for his
bride.

This book is special not for its text, which is a retelling of a
classic Grimm fairy tale, but for the quality of its illustrations.
Brimming with rich jewel tones of emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby
red, and gold and silver, each page presents an enchanting and detailed
picture. The illustrations of dressing for the dance, entering the magic
garden, and crossing the lake resemble elegant tapestries and would make
lovely posters. Highly recommended.
