Review

Rhyme and reason go for a romp together in this book of comic verse
about dogs. Even if you are a confirmed cat connoisseur, it is hard to
resist double-barreled couplets like “A Bassett’s an asset if you
like your dogs droopy, / But it’s not cool if they drool, ’cause
they get you all goopy.” Just about every facet of canine culture is
explored, from dogs on the prowl to dogs on the howl. Most impressively,
Dalton manages to keep her rhyme and rhythm standards consistently high
and yet stay delightfully silly from cover to cover. The verse is
perfectly matched by Kim LaFave’s high-energy illustrations. Each page
is a swirl of bow-wow bustle and visual surprises. The result is a book
that can be enjoyed as much in a re-reading as in the very first browse.
Highly recommended.
