Review

Caroline’s natural affinity for horses prompts her invitation by one
of Alberta’s leading stables to join its team as it prepares for the
provincial competition. When Caroline learns some uncomfortable truths
about the stable’s management, she must make important choices that
will affect her riding career. The story concludes with an emphasis not
on the competition but on the satisfaction that comes with staying true
to one’s values.

This well-written book is particularly strong in its descriptions of
the foothills of the Rockies. There is good use of equestrian
terminology. The plot is steady but not too exciting. The characters are
stock types who operate in familiar situations: the wealthy stable
owner, for example, is pitted against exemplary and hardworking
townsfolk. Nevertheless, McPhee’s heroine is an encouraging role model
for young girls. Recommended.
