Review

For the younger generation, family vacations, like family reunions, are
often about as exciting as visiting historical sites, viewing tranquil
scenery, or getting kissed by aged relatives. But Buddy Concrackle and
his sister Deedee happen to be the spawn of eccentrics—a lawn ornament
salesman and a garbage collector—and their family trip to Oregon in
search of some unusual business opportunities gives new meaning to the
term outrageous.

Buddy planned to create a photo album of the driving expedition, but
the films were destroyed. Actually, it is this lack of pictures that
creates Buddy’s story. He relates what happens along the way as if
describing real photos. Chris McMahen sustains the comical text gamely,
with at least two or three side-slapping incidents per page. Some
readers may find this book more amusing in small doses. Recommended.
