Review

Andrew Fraser, a veterinarian with a passion for ponies, has gathered
together personal memories and tales told to him by “Friends of the
Newfoundland Pony.” He prefaces the book with a historical overview of
the breed, in which he describes its flirtation with extinction.

The book consists of 12 chapters, each detailing the story of a
different pony. There is a fair bit of overlap, as many of the ponies
have been bred together and their stories are intermingled. Fraser’s
use of language is formal and somewhat old-fashioned. Although marketed
as a book for young people, this obvious labor of love will more likely
find its audience among adults who are concerned about animal
preservation in

general and the Newfoundland pony in particular. Recommended with
reservations.
