Review

Sam Westgate, a saxophone player with the high-school band the Mean
Machine, narrates a series of events that took place in his senior year.
Mounting tensions between bandleader Jack (Sam’s best friend) and
keyboard specialist Bobby erupt one evening, resulting in an accident
that severely damages them both: the catalyst is the new girl in town,
Sally. A suicide and the development of a close relationship between Sam
and Sally are two consequences of the traumatic events of that evening.

The characters that populate this story are never fully developed, and
the complex plot is given a rather superficial treatment. The
melodramatic language and situations are occasionally redeemed by
flashes of realistic dialogue. Not a first-choice purchase.
