Melissa, an 8-year-old from Burnaby, B.C., narrates this account of her
visit with Uncle Jack and his family, who live in Port Alberni on
Vancouver Island. At Cathedral Grove, a magnificent old-growth forest on
the Island, she describes her awe at seeing the giant trees, some more
than 800 years old. Her Uncle Jack is a logger, however, and she wonders
about his cutting down such magnificent trees. But Uncle Jack assures
her that parks like Cathedral Grove will never be logged, and that where
logging takes place, year-old seedlings are planted to ensure the
continued growth of the forest.
With so much media attention focused on the protection of forests,
children are often confused about the need for conservation and the
importance of logging. Luli Loyd’s text provides
clear, readable information about forestry and includes a glossary of
logging terms. Rebecca Davies’s illustrations are a combination of
cartoonlike drawings and photographs of logging areas and the equipment
used. Recommended.
