Review

In this heartwarming Christmas story, prolific children’s author Peter
Eyvindson gently demonstrates that treasures await those who conquer
their fear of the unknown. “Someone, somehow, sometime” caused a
7-year-old boy to be afraid of his oddly dressed, straggle-haired,
gap-toothed old neighbor Mary. When the two finally become acquainted
she teaches him about the old ways, offering the gifts of time,
conversation, simple generosity, and “the biggest and best present of
all,” her love.

With uncomplicated prose, Eyvindson conveys the honest emotions of the
tale, captivating the reader. Rhian Brynjolson’s subtle, engaging
illustrations enhance the text, rewarding but not requiring close study.
Red Parka Mary appeals on many levels. Recommended.
