Review
Early one stormy morning Jessa wakes to the howls of an endearing but
badly behaved stray dog, Romeo. Jessa and Romeo quickly become
inseparable. Jessa runs home from her Grade 6 class at lunch time to
feed and to run the dog. But Jessa’s mom is determined to find
Romeo’s owners, especially after he tears up carpets and destroys a
roomful of house plants. Mrs. Bailey, the owner of the stable where
Jessa boards her horse, Rebel, isn’t pleased with Romeo’s behavior
either. Add the part-time fostering of an abused horse, Sienna, to the
challenges facing Jessa, and the result is a very interesting main
character.
From Jessa’s mom to the fringe players in Romeo’s dog obedience
class, all of the characters in this novel are believable. The reader is
left wanting to meet them and chat with them. The author’s plotting is
also realistic. Readers don’t have to read the series’ previous
three volumes—Rebel of Dark Creek (1997), Team Trouble at Dark Creek
(1997), and Jessa Be Nimble, Rebel Be Quick (1998)—to enjoy this
fourth instalment. Highly recommended.
