Danny Budzynski finds an unusual arrowhead in a pasture near his home in
Fort MacLeod, Alberta. Will it bring him luck and help to protect him
against the humiliations he faces at school? When his newfound friend,
Joshua Brokenhorn, a First Nations boy from the Peigan Reserve, tells
him his discovery is a lance head, Danny is determined to find out more
about it. A series of fascinating adventures find Danny sneaking into
the closed Fort MacLeod Museum, dancing at a powwow, and learning to
hunt with traditional weapons. In the process, Joshua’s grandfather
teaches Danny how to see through new eyes, and Joshua’s mother, an
archeologist, informs Danny of the historical value of his lance head.
This wonderful story entertains and educates. Believable, likable
characters, a smooth and steady pace, and insights into the beliefs,
customs, and history of a First Nations culture will be cherished for
generations to come. Highly recommended.
