Review

To say that Jessie is serious about her sport is an understatement.
Jessie would rather be swimming than doing anything else in the world.
Her keen desire to work hard and her focus on the goal of making the
National competition is commendable, but her total commitment and
competitive spirit are in danger of becoming obsessive. Jessie’s
desire to win might have had bad consequences, but with the support of
honest friends, a good coach, and caring parents she overcomes illness
and injury to succeed in the best possible way.

This story, written by a swim team coach, offers a lifelike picture of
the young competitive athlete and insight into the dedication and
sacrifice necessary to success. Desirable values are modeled within the
context of a suspenseful plot that holds the reader’s interest
throughout. The book touches on the pitfalls of competitive sport, such
as the temptation to use anabolic steroids. The issue of drug use is
presented in a manner completely appropriate for the 8 to 13 audience.
Also central to the plot are issues of trust, jealousy, loyalty, and
friendship in teen relationships. Attractively presented and written in
accessible prose, this commendable addition to the Sports Stories series
is an ideal choice for the young female athlete. Recommended.
