Review

Alexander and his mother find a sparrow’s nest, filled with beautiful
mottled brown eggs, on their front porch. This gives Alexander the idea
to make a nest of his own from mud and dry grass to put in a tree in the
backyard. He watches both nests for several days hoping to see eggs in
his nest as well as in the sparrow’s, and one day he finds some
beautiful blue eggs waiting for him. Soon there is a further surprise,
prepared by a loving mother who is inspired by her son to her own
creative act.

Marjorie Speed succeeds in telling her lovely story well. Using her own
son Alexander as a model, her realistic pictures enhance the
well-written text. Though I would have chosen a less-busy cover picture
to draw readers to this book, it does not seriously detract from the
book’s overall appeal. Recommended.
