Review

This attractive, oversized collection of 47 puzzles with its glossy red,
white, and blue cover and semigloss inside pages offers students some
unique challenges concerning countries bordering the Pacific Rim.
According to subject (e.g., Chinese inventions, British Columbia,
Australian animals), Wakan presents one puzzle per page, each graded
easy, medium, or difficult. Her illustrations add a most pleasing touch.

The puzzles cover a variety of subjects—foods, customs, festivals,
religions, history, geography, even fun tidbits—and seem to be fairly
graded. A great way to learn. While a good number of answers should come
easily, others will take some research (which is the purpose of this
unique book). To assist, a list of resource titles, including specific
magazine issues, accompanies each puzzle. Wakan advises students to have
at their disposal a good atlas (a dictionary wouldn’t hurt either).

For any school that purchases this book, “permission is ... granted
to photocopy individual puzzles to be used by students within that
school.” Take Wakan up on it. Highly recommended.
