Review

Mama God, Papa God is the sixth children’s book by Grenada-born
Keens-Douglas, who has appeared on radio, television, and stage and won
several awards for his writing.

Mama God and Papa God sat alone in the darkness. Papa God began by
making light. Then he made the earth. Together, Papa God and Mama God
filled the earth with everything that is in it. They “set it
spinning” and made the sun, moon, and stars. They made people just
like themselves and made them all the same. That didn’t look quite
right, so Mama God suggested making the people different colors, shapes,
and sizes. They gave them different languages and dialects. Then they
admired what they had made and went right on creating “more
magnificent things.”

Drawing on ancient mythological traditions, Keens-Douglas has written a
creation story that reflects the delight, curiosity, and creativity of a
child. Czernecki’s colorful, sophisticated illustrations complement
the story. Highly recommended.
