Deborah Dowson is a children’s librarian in Caledon East, Ontario.

Starla McKnight opposes her family’s move from Sydney to Vancouver.
Fortunately, she soon meets new friends and begins to feel as if she
belongs. As Starla makes choices about her new friends, she learns that
appearances can sometimes be deceiving.

This story touches on issues ranging from racism to the importance of
heritage and belonging. Most of the characters are models of exemplary
teen behavior. The clear descriptive prose, fine pace, and very
appealing central character make for a pleasurable reading experience.
Unfortunately, the title has juvenile connotations and the cover is
uninspiring. Recommended with reservations.
