Review

Rusty finds his younger brother, Nubby, an embarrassing nerd, but his
knowledge and inventive mind can be useful. He hangs out with the
junior-high crowd when they play baseball, acting as umpire. One of his
calls gets him a punch from Marc Weatheral. Marc explains that he has
heard that his father, whom he believed dead, is alive.

The ballplayers decide to try to find Marc’s father, who is living in
Montreal. With Nubby masterminding the plan, they form a team, win a
trip to Montreal, and eventually locate Marc’s father.

This fast-moving story features well-developed characters and a feast
of baseball lore. The brilliant Nubby is an inspiration to nonathletes.
Recommended.
