Review

It takes a pretty special person to ruin a week’s vacation in Florida,
but Wayne Nishikawa is managing to do just that for all his friends.
Wayne, or “Nish” as he is known to his teammates, is probably the
most talented player on the Screech Owls, a peewee hockey team that has
come all the way from Ottawa to Orlando to play in a March-break
championship. The Screech Owls had a good chance of winning the
tournament until Nish started showing off and irritating his teammates
with his dumb practical jokes. But Nish’s bold nature comes in handy
when the Screech Owls see some suspicious-looking adults dumping a
cadaverlike object in a nearby lake. The Screech Owls have only one day
left in their vacation to win the tournament and solve a mystery, and
Nish may be the key to both adventures.

Like its predecessors, this 6th book in the Screech Owl series combines
skilful character interaction, a whodunit mystery, and lots of hockey.
As a professional sportswriter and former amateur hockey player himself,
Roy MacGregor has few equals in capturing the essence of peewee hockey
from both the spectator’s and the player’s points of view. The
fast-paced and believable plot will resonate for anyone who has ever
experienced life on the road with a busload of kids and sweaty sports
equipment. Recommended.
