Review

“One little monster, prancing all around, laughing, squealing like a
goblin clown. Twirling dervish, really makes me squirmish, silly little
monster one. Two little monsters, looking at me funny. Grinning,
scheming, jumping up like bunnies. Creepy, kooky frights, how their
tricks delight, oh, you little monsters two.”

If you liked these monsters, the good news is that you still have eight
more to go in this fun little tale about someone who wants to go to
sleep but whose bedroom keeps filling up with mischievous dancing
monsters.

Mimi Maxwell’s rhyming text runs from one to ten little monsters and
contains lots of word-play. But young readers will have no trouble
following the story line because Maxwell always keeps to the same theme
of dancing monsters. The illustrations are all black silhouettes on an
orange background, which gives them an unmistakable Hallowe’en tone.
All the monsters resemble happy little black devils that are not likely
to cause any nightmares. Recommended.
