Review

Koko the dog cannot understand why no one is paying attention to him.
His owners are busy packing; even their son Erin is ignoring him. Only
after the family car is fully packed with boxes, bags, and food does
Koko realize that he, Camille (the family cat), and the family are going
camping.

The drive seems to take forever. At the park gate, the ranger checks to
make sure that Koko and Camille have had all their vaccinations. At the
campsite, they set up the tent and then the whole family goes for a
hike. Koko can smell the strange scents of many wild animals. Camille
almost becomes dinner for a large hawk but she is very brave. With the
adventure over, the family returns to the tent and settles down for the
night.

This is Judith Weisbrot’s fourth picture book about Koko the canine,
who is a bit of a “scaredy dog” and who spends his time worrying
about everyone’s safety, even that of his fearless companion Camille.
The book combines tips on responsible pet ownership with a cute story
line written from a dog’s point of view. Koko will particularly appeal
to younger readers because of his lack of heroics; the book will appeal
because the writing and illustrations are very simple and easy to
follow. Recommended.
