Review
Jeff Beacon is an average 13-year-old from Halifax. He is on his way to
Juneau, Alaska, because his well-meaning parents insisted that he
accompany them on some boring cruise up the Pacific Coast. Jeff suspects
that the holiday cruise was his grief counselor’s idea, to help Jeff
get over the death of his beloved bull terrier, Buddy.
When the ship docks in Juneau and Jeff steps off, it’s 1997; when he
hits the ground, it’s August 1933—and he’s alone. What follows is
a tale of time travel, political corruption, counterfeit money,
high-seas sabotage and skulduggery, plus young love, old ships, and an
uncanny canine named Patsy Anne.
Those in the mood for a good old-fashioned wonder-dog-to-the-rescue
story will not be disappointed by this one. The authors have done their
homework. Whether Jeff is strolling the decks of the modern cruise ship
or skulking the docks in Depression-era Juneau, the careful attention to
detail gives the reader a strong sense of time and place. The story is
fast-paced and features lots of colorful characters. Highly recommended.
