Review

An addition to Crabtree’s Eye on the Universe series, Cosmic Light
Shows covers astronomical phenomena visible from earth. The book devotes
two pages to each of a wide variety of topics, including the sun, stars,
the birth of a star, novas and super novas, constellations, galaxies,
comets, asteroids and meteors, the moon, lunar eclipses, solar eclipses,
and auroras.

Simplified explanations and descriptions are interspersed with
photographs and drawings. Words that are likely to be new are
highlighted. Some, but not all, of the new words are included in the
glossary; there is no obvious reason why some words were excluded.
Finally, there is no list of reference sources, in spite of the fact
that the book includes factual information that would not be common
knowledge.

Caveats aside, Cosmic Light Shows is a good introduction to the
subject. The language is age-appropriate, and the photographs are
excellent. Recommended to school and public libraries.
